CTM 2021: Thank You, Archived Recordings, and CTM Cyberia

Design: Marius Rehmet, VOJD

The first part of CTM 2021 is a wrap!

It’s been an incredibly enriching experience and we are grateful to have had the means to experiment with and present such varied online/hybrid formats and artistic projects and sounds. Thanks to the incredible input and contributions from all artists, speakers, partners, and collaborators, as well as the tremendous support of venue partners and production teams that coordinated both across great distances and within covid-safe proximity.

Our 22nd edition represented a whole other kind of challenge and demanded very different energy at every level, from the artists transmitting their works remotely, all the way through to you, the viewers, tuning in from your homes and projecting a feeling of togetherness through cute chats and emoji sequences. Thank you to everyone who joined us from all corners of the globe and at all hours of the day.

We're happy to announce more activities coming up, as well as a slew of archived resources and new commissioned articles for you to peruse in the coming months.

Now open, CTM Cyberia is presented in a configuration that is slightly different than originally planned. Despite our team working around the clock, currently not all artworks are seamlessly integrated within the virtual environment. Artworks can thus be viewed in two ways. All artworks are embedded in the CTM website and can be accessed via standalone pages. In parallel, visitors can also access CTM Cyberia via web browser and explore the full scope of the space as well as many (but not all) of the artworks. We’re all very excited to finally share these captivating artworks with you and hope that you enjoy diving deep into Cyberia!

Essays and Interviews on Transformation

Commissioned for CTM 2021, a first series of articles explore the theme of #transformation from a range of perspectives.

Kyle Devine asks if the rise of the streaming era really reduces energy use and greenhouse gas emissions compared to the live gig economy; CTM co-curator and editor Ollie Zhang speaks to cultural anthropologist Anand Pandian about degrowth and the potencies of narrative; Manila-based music writer Dominic Zinampan speaks with Club Matryoshka co-founder Jorge Juan B. Wienecke V on what it means to play with online formats and events; in an interview with transmediale and CTM, artists Frances Scott and Tom Richards speak about their ongoing work exploring the legacies of Wendy Carlos and Daphne Oram; and Christina Wheeler details the process of inquiry and deep meditations on intimacy, surrender, and solitude that feed her evolving work on The Totality of Blackness Trilogy.

Another batch of articles from our past print editions have also been published and more will continue to be made available in the coming months.
