Fresh CTM 2022 Programme Updates

CTM 2022 – Contact Keyvisual Design by VOJD

We are just weeks away from coming together at CTM 2022 Part 2. We’re excited to once again experience the interplay of bodies, spaces, sounds, and music over a six-day programme that is flushed out with special concerts headlining Moor Mother and KOKOKO!; Pussykrew’s AI-powered avatars sharing messages of rage, rave and wonder across the city; and an excursion into the immersive 4DSOUND system at MONOM with Grand River.

New additions to the CTM Discourse programme include Forensic Architecture affiliate Susan Schuppli speaking with Faiza Ahmad Khan, musician Via App joining a lecture-performance by Geoffrey Mak, as well as the Alkisah Network speaking on the potentials of decentralising music production. An open call with Black Swan for their experiment »Prototyping Sonic Institutions,« is now public, with a deadline of May 9. Registragion is also open for the second workshop within Kontinuum project »In Search of Good Ancestors« with Jonathan Reus, artist and researcher Eleni Ikoniadou, and experimental publishing collective Varia. MusicMakers Hacklab fellows for our 2022 edition are also announced.

Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz and CTM are excited to bring together three artists who weave intimate and powerful narratives through broad-ranging and fresh approaches to composition. The hypnotic compositions of Catalan artist Marina Herlop are a winding exploration of the human voice and electronics. Space Afrika's genre-spanning compositions combine dreamlike ambient tapestries and echo-laden deep beats that form the bed for sensations of movement and redemption. Moor Mother returns to Berlin in support of Black Encyclopedia of the Air, a release which the artist claims she wanted to make »more accessible, and to get to ears that don’t really know me or have been afraid of me« (Pitchfork).

This concert is not included in the CTM 2022 festival pass, please purchase a separate ticket to attend.

Artist and composer Aimée Portioli Foley, aka Grand River, who will perform her intimate composition »Tuning the Wind« live, spatialised and mixed in 4DSOUND. Stefanie Egedy will enchant Monom's bar with a low-frequency Sub-Bass Invigorating dose, exploring the potential contained in sound waves and subwoofers to invigorate the nervous system and the body. During the day, Monom Studios will premiere the interactive installation »Human / Nature / Machine« by William Russell.

An avatar appearing in »/ orcl /« Created by Pussykrew

In »/ orcl /,« AI-powered avatars arise from deep crevices of the city through mystical portals to queer their urban surroundings, inviting you to listen to their messages from the in-between to reclaim your energy. Their messages, found via QR codes placed across six CTM Festival locations, plus further locations in the city, are accompanied by sound scores specially crafted by local musicians Born in Flamez, Perera Elsewhere, and Ziúr.

Originally a live presentation of Hildur Guðnadóttir’s multi award-winning score for the critically acclaimed HBO TV series, »Chernobyl« is now a performance in its own right, gathering layers of meaning in the face of Russia’s invasion on Ukraine. An artistic statement of support for Ukraine, this fundraiser concert sees Hildur joined by collaborators Chris Watson and Sam Slater to present a concert in the setting of Kraftwerk, a former power station in the centre of Berlin. Joining them on stage is Theresa Baumgartner (light design) and Francesco Donadello (sound spatialisation).

Four tiers of ticketing, from 30 to 100 Euros, allow audiences to support how they can. It is also possible to donate 30 EUR without attending – contribute further by purchasing multiple tickets. All proceeds will be donated to various charities providing humanitarian and medical aid to Ukraine: the Ukraine-based Help Ukraine Center, Ukraine-Hilfe Berlin e.V., and Ukraiński Dom w Warszawie.

»Chernobyl« is presented by Krakow’s Unsound, Berlin’s CTM and Atonal, Dnipro-based festival Construction, Kraftwerk, Tresor, Deutsche Grammophon and Satis & Fy. Media partner: Modern Matters.
