Marco Donnarumma »Ex Silens« Photo: Marco Donnarumma

What is deafness if not another mode of perception? What is a cyborg if not an exploded mirror of today’s corporeal experience? Running 2 & 3 February 2024, »Ex Silens« is a performance by Marco Donnarumma that investigates deafness, sound, and (artificial) intelligence through participatory research driven by and with d/Deaf and hard-of-hearing people. The performances will be flushed out with the screening of the short documentary film Niranthea, accompanied by a talk by Donnarumma with DGS German sign language interpretation on 3 February.

Partner Event: Ligeti 100.101

31.1.2024 | 18:00-20:00 | Free entry
Berlin Open Lab, UdK, Einsteinufer 43

Concert and discussion with: Andrea Szigetvári (HU), Samu Gryllus (HU / AT), Boris Hegenbart (DE), Ágnes Klára Máthé (HU), Ákos Lovász (HU), Georg Friedrich Volkert (IT / DE), Miriam Jochmann (AT) Daria Redkina (UA), Victor Burton (CA)

The Ligeti 100.101 project celebrates 100 years since the composer György Ligeti's birth by inviting nine artists to research the composer's oeuvre through a creative process, where a deep understanding of his methods, thought, and metaphors provides inspiration for the creation of new pieces performed by an ensemble of electronic musicians. The performing artists were invited to work with Ligeti's ideas using computers, analogue/digital synthesisers, and algorithmic processes more than five decades after the composer abandoned electronic devices. Following concerts hosted by the music academies of Vienna and Budapest, this third and final concert will be hosted by UdK in Berlin.

We launch or series of CTM 2024 articles with the essay »Quantum Computer Music. What the Heck?« Tapping into the properties and laws of quantum mechanics, the nascent field of quantum computing promises a technological leap that will make current computation and AI systems look obsolete. Eduardo Reck Miranda, composer and pioneer in the field of AI and music, gives a brief overview of the history of computing and sound that lead to this new leap, and adds examples of his own music practice with quantum computing.
