On This Week: SUMAC & Moor Mother

17.04.2025  |  Bi Nuu (note: venue change from Festsaal Kreuzberg)
Support: Pharaoh Overlord

What happens when you combine SUMAC, a band that uses the volume, distortion, and guitar-centric approach of metal to make music that has the malleability of jazz and textural exploration of noise, with Moor Mother, a poet and sound artist that has deconstructed hip hop to a point where it's less about rhyme and rhythm and more about oratorical cadence and power? Heavy, holy, hypnotizing, beyond existence, beyond the fettered constraints of normality, past the false notions of the indoctrinated – »The Film« is an album that takes attributes of both artists' work and finds common ground in shifting musical patterns, and expressive force.

Catch SUMAC & Moor Mother when they collide live on stage in Berlin on April 17th for a feral onslaught of sludge, noise, and radical poetics, tearing open history’s wounds and demanding reckoning.

Finnish duo Pharaoh Overlord set the stage with hypnotic krautrock, industrial grind, and synth-laced delirium. »The Film« is out April 25th on Thrill Jockey

CTM 2025 Radio Lab commissions are available to stream online via Deutschlandfunk Kultur.

Listen to »Sonic Forces« by Yara Mekawei is set against the politically charged landscape of Egypt, where borders with Palestine, Libya, and Sudan represent sites of war and refuge. The project delves into the paradox of seeking safety amid deeper personal struggles.

»Resonant Resilience« by Lynn Nandar Htoo and rEmPiT g0dDe$$ explores the experiences of individuals displaced by the ongoing political turmoil in Myanmar and the harsh regulations faced by queer communities in Malaysia.

The CTM Radio Lab is led by CTM Festival and Deutschlandfunk Kultur – Radio Art / Klangkunst in collaboration with Goethe-Institut, ORF musikprotokoll im steirischen herbst, Ö1 Kunstradio, and the sound art initiative tekhnē, which is co-funded by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union.

CTM Magazine: New Article by Luigi Monteanni

Bandung Underground Photo: Frans Ari Prasetyo

In a second article exploring the Resynthesising the Traditional thread, the artist and researcher Luigi Monteanni examines how two extreme sonic worlds – the traditional trance ceremonial réak and metal – have intersected into unlikely alliances in Indonesia. In »Extreme Traditions: On Bandung’s Intergenerational Sonic Ecologies« Monteanni examines how a localised traditional sound and a contemporary global genre have influenced each other in West Java in the ongoing resistance to cooptation by neoliberal politics, as well as to connected experiences of geotrauma and the rise of ethnolocality.
